EWDD Service Program Success Stories

Boyle Heights YouthSource intern, Gizelle Lopez, began gaining work experience in high school at Homeboy Arts Academy. During this time, she had no work experience and was unsure of which career or educational goals to pursue.

Gizelle completed two paid internships at the Homeboy Arts Academy. She gained knowledge about money management, how to build a professional resume, and developed strong communication skills. Gizelle used the exposure to fashion, design, and business as inspiration to create her own clothing brand, Luv Angelez. She received two scholarships towards her business endeavors, each worth $2,000.

California State Senator Maria Elena-Durazo recognized Gizelle’s hard work and awarded her a Certificate of Recognition. Gizelle reflected on her experiences in the Homeboy Arts Academy and the program's benefits. “Some skills strengthened during my experience with the YouthSource Center were independence, learning how to write emails and communicating professionally,” she said. “Practicing useful adult skills such as how to manage money and building a strong resume, being able to learn about different opportunities and resources I wouldn’t have found anywhere else.”
