On May 1, 2017, Mayor Eric Garcetti launched the Los Angeles Small Business Week with a recognition ceremony that honored 28 local small businesses that have successfully utilized the City and government-funded resources.

Dressed in their best interview attire, students from nine of the City of Los Angeles’ 13 YouthSource centers attended Engage LA: Pathways to Public Service, an event held Tuesday April 25 to encourage young people in LA to join the City of Los Angeles’ workforce.

Over the past 26 years, Isabel Beauty Salon in South Los Angeles has become a favorite local hangout, with lines of people waiting to get in for the latest hair style.

Still, even beauty trendsetters need an update. Salon owner Maria Cabrera wanted to expand her business, so she turned to the Central/West BusinessSource Center for business counseling and advice. The center has provided entrepreneurs and small business owners with training, technical assistance and access to capital through their Business Assistance Center since 1993. Working closely with the center, Ms. Cabrera completed a business plan and created a pricing strategy to further her business goals.

Economic and Workforce Development Department (EWDD) General Manager Jan Perry moderated a panel discussion of women’s business owners that was the centerpiece of “HerStory: She Persisted.” The yearly event is held by the Vermont Slauson Economic Development Corporation (VSEDC) in celebration of National Women’s History Month.

More than 200 people attended the event, which included a reception and exhibits from women-owned businesses. Moderated by Ms. Perry, the panel included four entrepreneurs: Michelle Allaire, owner of Michelle's Country Diner and and S&W Restaurant; Cassie Betts,

2017 Los Angeles Abilities Expo and Career Fair
Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti kicked off the Abilities Career Fair at the Los Angeles Abilities Expo 2017, held Friday, March 24 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Abilities Expo is a nationwide set of large-scale exhibitions focused entirely on the wide variety of services, products, advocacy and activities for the disability community. The City of Los Angeles Department on Disability partnered with the City of Los Angeles and the County of Los Angeles Workforce Development Boards to co-sponsor the very First Annual Job Fair portion of the event.

Purposeful Aging in Los Angeles
On Tuesday, January 31st, EWDD General Manager Jan Perry presented the EWDD initiatives developed in response to the Mayor’s Executive Directive #17 (Age-Friendly City Initiative: Purposeful Aging LA) at the Neighborhood Council Purposeful Aging Liaison Town Hall.
