Since 2010, EWDD has partnered with the LA LGBT Center to provide education and employment opportunities to homeless and disconnected LGBTQ youth. Through its partnership with the City’s YouthSource Centers, the LA LGBT Center has been able to provide youth, many who are struggling with homelessness, opportunities to explore and prepare for careers they may otherwise never have considered.

The East Los Angeles BusinessSource Center provided extensive business consulting, strategic planning, and one-on-one assistance to Sushi Beluga owner Cun Sang Chi, helping the Restaurateur become the first recipient of the City’s Micro Loan program.

Restaurateur Cun Sang Chi was approved for a $50,000 loan to launch Sushi Beluga in Playa Del Rey. Scheduled to open in Spring 2019, the sushi restaurant will open with six full-time employees with the hopes of hiring two additional full-time employees as demand grows.

Members of Councilmember Bob Blumenfield’s Economic Development Community Action Team (BobCAT) were pleased to learn about the EWDD’s services, especially the City’s Business Response Unit (BRU) when Interim General Manager John L. Reamer, Jr. was a featured guest speaker Monday April 15, 2019.

John provided an overview of EWDD and listened to the concerns of the business community leaders to understand their needs.

Grace Godinez, special education assistant at LAUSD
The Hollywood WorkSource Center recently helped Grace Godinez, a person with a disability, find a full-time job as a special education assistant at the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD).

Grace graduated from California State University, Northridge (CSUN) in May 2018 with a Bachelor’s degree in Childhood Development. After seeking work for several months and visiting the Disability Resources and Educational Services (DRES) office at CSUN, a DRES counselor introduced Grace to the Disability Employment Accelerator (DEA) program, which had started a new collaboration with the Hollywood WorkSource Center, overseen by EWDD partner Managed Career Solutions.

LA:RISE Participant Earns Nursing Assistant Certificate and Looks Ahead

“Don’t let barriers hold you back from succeeding,” said Sharnise, a participant at LA:RISE partner Homeboy Industries who was recently certified as a nursing assistant. “In life if you mess up, you still have a chance to fix your mistakes.”

With the help of Homeboy Industries, Sharnise is striving to live out that ethos and set an example for her children.

The Vernon-Central/Los Angeles Technical Trade College (LATTC) WorkSource Center, in partnership with the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) Division of Adult and Career Education (DACE), helped Tia Kirk recently complete the Computer Operator Clerk program at East Los Angeles Occupational Center.

“There are a lot people all working toward similar life goals and willing to help each other,” she said. “I’m really grateful and thankful to have had this opportunity.”
