L.A. stories of inspiration and success

While most teens are buying iPads and the latest mobile phones, 18-year-old Axel Osnaya and 17-year-old Sincere Lathers have spent the last two years saving and investing in their shaved ice business, Snowie! Snowie is a Hawaiian-style ice shaving business that serves snow cones in flavors such as lemon-lime, piña colada, and strawberry.

The friends met in the Young Entrepreneur Program at the Southeast YouthSource Center in Watts. The duo worked after school and during summer breaks to save their startup capital. Axel and Sincere originally planned to open the business with four other friends, but in the end, they were the ones who stuck it out to make it happen.

"Our lives were primarily school, homework, chores, and work. However, to finally achieve our goal, I can look back and say it was worth it, definitely worth it," said Sincere.

With support from the Southeast YouthSource Center, Axel and Sincere launched their business in the Fall of 2022. Now, the young entrepreneurs want to expand their business so that they may attend large-scale events and work their way up to opening their own brick and mortar location someday and hire other young entrepreneurs like themselves along the way.

"We are reaching out to companies in the sports industries such as football, baseball, soccer stadiums, as well as other events and promoters such as concerts, conventions, and fairs, to give us the opportunity to operate our business at events," Axel said.
