L.A. stories of inspiration and success

Lerida Mojica, owner of NY Cake Pops
With guidance from the Pico-Union/Westlake BusinessSource Center (BSC), East-coast based NY Cake Pops has expanded its presence from New York City into the Los Angeles Area.

NY Cake Pops is owned by Lerida Mojica and Robert Rodriguez. Lerida first came to the US from Mexico in 2003 and met her husband, Robert, in the same year. She first began making cake pops for her children's birthday parties and immediately noticed the outpouring of requests and positive feedback from friends and family.

"I really like that we've become a family tradition for some; serving birthday parties, graduations, weddings, and even family gatherings. It makes us feel like we're accepted into a larger family, being able to provide a small pop of happiness one bite at a time. Thanks to the Pico-Union/Westlake BSC, we can extend our family into Los Angeles."

In 2009, Lerida began branching out and catering for company parties in New York City. NY Cake Pops was an immediate hit and thus began her growth with corporate accounts. Lerida's company supplies cake pops to notable NYC venues such as Madison Square Garden, the Plaza Hotel and Dylan's Candy Bar. As corporate accounts began to spread across the United States, the next logical step was to expand and open a retail location in LA.

Lerida and Robert first began their process of opening a shop in LA by obtaining a former dry-cleaning business. They approached PACE, operator of the Pico-Union/Westlake BSC, to help secure capital to establish their LA flagship retail location. The Pico-Union/Westlake BSC helped New York Cake Pops secure a $200,000 loan and additional funds in grants to help complete the renovations of their new location.

The LA branch of NY Cake Pops is located in LA City Council District 5 at 7306 Beverly Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90036.
