With support from the Harbor WorkSource Center and EWDD partner Friends Outside, EWDD hosted a booth at the KJLH Men’s EmpowerMENt summit September 7, 2019 highlighting free job training and educational benefits available through the City’s Gang Injunction Curfew Settlement.

In the weeks leading up to the event, EWDD, in partnership with the LA City Attorney’s Office, launched a radio and social media campaign with KJLH to spread the word about the program.

More than 50 individuals visited the EWDD booth to learn more about the program.

Erick Serrato, assistant director at the Harbor WorkSource Center, said that he has witnessed firsthand individuals who have benefited from the career advisement, scholarships and other resources available through the program.

“Some of the success stories we have are individuals who got the letter, but were shy about coming in,” Erick said. “After going through a couple orientations they filed their paperwork with us, they worked with one of our career counselors over a couple months, were connected with a job within the City. Now they are working, making pretty good money in a stable job, all because they took advantage of that program.” He added, “We also have instances where we have someone who is eligible for the benefit who transferred it to their daughter. Their daughter was able to use that to pay for their first year of college with no loans needed.”

The KJLH Men’s EmpowerMENt summit is a forum intended to provide training, workshops and other resources to help men of color achieve success.
